Taking early retirement from the Australian Public Service, John Derrington travels to the England of the 1980s where he buys a farm just outside Nottingham and starts on a serious study of the Ninteenth Century Luddites. This is the story of his relationship with Josephine, a young Nottingham University student, and of their research into the history of the Industrial Revolution. It tells also, and crucially, of the irreversible transition from a healthy interest in his Nottingham forebears to the terrible compulsion that cannot be denied and that leads inevitably to overwhelming delusion. |
